Oval Poll

Oval Poll: Do you agree?

  1. I do not support tax dollars funding the Oval regardless of location. I don't feel there are any choices to reflect my opinion so can't vote.

  2. It's simply unfair to tax for this. It is a non-essential service. It is simply recreational and it will most likely end up being a huge waste of money once the novelty wears off. If anything, it should be a 'pay to play' sort of thing. I personally do not intend to us it, so I shouldn't have to pay for others to use it either.

  3. Supporting smaller neighbourhood rinks would seem a much better idea. HRM does not have a good record of maintenance of its existing recreational facilities so it is naive to think the Oval will be different.

  4. Oval is a novelty right now - when you take monies from sidewalk , street and other repairs your compromising safety. We do not need it!

  5. I can't believe my own stupidity because I felt it was truly a temporary, neighbourhood issue.

Here in HRM, we have $10 million in improvements being made to the Halifax Forum and $22 million in improvements to the Dartmouth Sportsplex so people can skate INSIDE and we are expected to pay $6 million for an oval so people can skate OUTSIDE!?!?!
Why can't the oval supporters go to the Sportsplex or the Forum and skate in circles?

I DO NOT want my taxes used to pay for another incursion onto the Halifax Commons.

  6. The Commons should remain as it exists! The Oval is a novelty - a 90 day
usage at a cost of $400,000 a year is ridiculous...there is no parking in the area. Increases in gasoline, power, water - we do not need an increase in taxes.
Effort should be made to focus on community rinks and recreational facilities. Barrington and Gottingen Streets and the construction holes in the downtown are embarassing.

  7. Get it off the Common. There is too little space there as it is and too much has been taken already without real consultation. An outdoor rink is a great idea even if it is a bit pricey but it should not require the kind of money that is being quoted. As for commercial sponsorship - never on the commons! If those companies want to give money - let them do it, but do not turn the commons into a billboard.
